Photographer: Jason DeMarte

I was browsing through butdoesitfloat yesterday and came across photographer Jason DeMarte. I was instantly drawn to his work mainly because I’m a big fan of photography that has a graphic quality to it. His usage of shapes and patterns give his compositions a strong sense of tension and movement, which is cool especially when combined with taxidermy subject matter. The photos below are some samples from his latest book “UTOPIC“. If you like Jason’s work and style you might also like, Andrea Galvani.

Enjoy!

  1. His photos are indeed cool, but what’s with his fascination with, bingo balls or something? :)

I loved the picture with the beavers on it, gnawing on the tree branches to make a dam. It looked good, and the photo quality is really excellent.

  2. What’s the motivation for something like this? “I love taking photos of nature and environment, but something’s missing… I know! Dots that aren’t in a standard color scheme, of all shapes and sizes!”

I have to say, I think the photos are striking. But maybe it’s the nerd in me, I just don’t understand how a style like this is started.

  3. I think the colored balls work best with the mountain goats. Jason De Marte is obviously a talented photographer/artist who enjoys stretching the boundaries of the medium.

  4. Thanks for posting these photos.

In particular, the Twinkies in the sky gave me pause. They are quite heavenly, and have absolutely nothing to do with bears.

  5. @Eric: That’s exactly what I was thinking! At what point did this concept occur to the artist? He has a photograph of a landscape, and is underwhelmed because it feels incomplete? Or maybe he just loves little circles, and needs a backdrop.

  6. I agree with “Elliot”, of what the artist think of this pictures

  7. I do appreciate what DeMarte is going for. I find that layering different elements can be really striking, especially when it is something as seemingly incongruent as bold colors splashed across an expansive natural background.

  8. I’m surprised only Jamal mentioned the Twinkies. The dots are interesting and all, but the Twinkies force you to consider the artist’s meaning.

  9. Jason

I can’t say that I care much for the balls or understand why he used them, but the quality of the photos are amazing…they almost look more like paintings than actual photos. I would love to know what sort of processing he did to get that effect.

    Jason Allen,

  10. I like this kind of work because its evocative. It makes you feel something. And it promotes discussion. Great example of artwork.

  11. I wonder how popular the photos would be on their own, without the addition of the colorful dots. Admittedly, they do take it to a more artistic level…

  12. Skittles should hire this guy for their advertising

  13. that skittles comment is pretty funny!! lovely work
